Today's New York Times article named the village of the burned church as Kiambaa. A gang of young men pushed mattresses and other obstacles in front of the doors and windows and set them on fire, so the intent was certainly to burn everyone - mostly women and children - alive. I suppose Kiambaa is a suburb of Eldoret, though my GE search was without result. Here is an on-the-ground photo of one of the church buildings:

Violence has erupted in the major cities, small savannah towns and on the coast. The worst is in the Rift Valley area. More Kikuyus are being killed every day and the comparison with Rwanda can't be avoided. Again, the "ruling class" who run the government, businesses and institutions are mainly from one tribe: the Kikuyu. Resentment against them has simmered for years among the minority tribes. President Kibaki, who is Kikuyu, and Raila Odinga, the Luo opposition candidate, are doing absolutely nothing to calm the situation.

Nairobi slum riots - all businesses are closed:

See this post by imsvru, who has, unfortunately, done only this one '06 post about
Kibera Slum. A good, brief summary of the pre-existing problems here and informative links.

On a personal note, it makes me heartsick to see this happening. I've been to Kenya twice and did business there - with Kikuyu merchants and exporters. Even in the '80s, there were millions of idle, angry young men and a pseudo-democratic government. The fuel that starts fires like this. Splaestro, I think you're right - the worst may be yet to come.
