There is a huge colony of Allegheny Mound Ants (Formica exsectoides) in the Rocky Point portion of the Long Island Pine Barrens, consisting of hundreds of anthills distributed over many acres. Some of the anthills are over two feet high and several feet across, and are, therefore, visible on the Google Earth imagery.
