This boulder is a glacial erratic that is part of the Harbor Hill Moraine which is situated along the length of the North Shore of Long Island. The Terryville Outwash Plain lies a short distance south of this location. About 20,750 years ago the erratic was carried here from the bedrock of Long Island Sound or southern Connecticut by a continental ice sheet. The boulder is about 8 feet in height.

The erratic can be seen along with a descriptive plaque on the west side of Nicolls Road, just south of the south entrance to the Stony Brook University campus. Behind the erratic is a woodland of black oak, black birch, sassafras, and other trees typical of Long Island's North Shore.
