Live Free (or die of the heat) at Slab City!

Slab city is an abandoned military base in the desert. Only cement slabs remain, but it is the winter home for thousands of squatting "snow-birds" and free-spirits. Some live here year-round, despite the summer heat that can reach 120 and more. (Zoom in on the attached 1994 overlay. You can see the slabs, and many "slabbers.")

Quote:

Slab City is one of the most free 'cities' in the whole United States...It's like the old Pioneer Days. - Leonard Knight, 72, the creator of Salvation Mountain

I was looking for Salvation Mountain when I learned about Slab City. Salvation Mountain is a a dirt hill plastered with multi-hued clay proclaiming "God is Love." Its creator welcomes visitors, and accepts cans of paint as donations. Based on this hand-drawn map (not to any scale), Salvation Mountain is at the southwest part of my overlay, near the bend of the road. (Apparently, it is not one of the multicolored anomalies that you can find by examining the surrounding area with Keyhole.)

A good article.
