When fading out the overlay, taken May of 1989, it shows how the shrimp farms have grown, displacing the Mangroves, in the Gulf of Fonesca on the west coast of Central America. As Mangrove Action Project puts it: "The story unfolding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina really hits home with the need to conserve and restore the coastal wetlands, whether these are mangrove or tidal marshlands. This follows suit with what Mangrove Action Project has been saying about losses from the tsunami of 2004 or the cyclone in India in 1999--the wetlands protect the people who protect the wetlands."
