The attached KMZ file contains an overlay of a geologic map of New York City, including a legend and a geologic time scale. The images in the overlay, which include parts of the one below, are from
USGS: Geology of the New York City Region: A Preliminary Regional Field-Trip Guidebook.

The USGS web documents include a great deal of detailed information about the geology of New York City and the surrounding area, including additional maps representing features connected with particular past geologic events. These events include several episodes of landmass collisions due to plate tectonics which created mountains and supercontinents, the rifting apart of supercontinents, also due to plate tectonics, transgressions and regressions of the sea, and advances and retreats of continental ice sheets.
