The argentine Bajo del Gualicho saline is the lowest point in South America with -90 meters below sea level and just 38 km / 23 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.



About the name

The word Gualicho means "Bad Spirit" in Mapudungn, the language of the Mapuche people, native from Patagonia.

Mapuche people says that you have to have respect to the Gualicho spirit otherwise you can get very ill or have an accident. So, they recommend not to sing at nigth, to leave litlle stones near some trees besides the roads and not to wear hat inside your house.
