No is isn't, (tesselate is nice tho thanks!), basically applying the grid to a curved earth surface, means that the lines arent exactly streight. See this map which shows the grid with lat/long lines, trying to imagine that plastered on a sphere might help but is mind bending!

However its only a slight curve so havent given it much priority considering how much processing it would add.
