The Soviet Union rushed to develop their first bomb in the late 1940's, and succeeded with a test nicknamed "Joe 1", in honor of Stalin, in 1949.

Lake Chagan was formed by the Chagan tests.

Most of these Soviet tests took place at the Semipalatinsk test area or at the Arctic test range on and around Novya Zemlya.
