Due to the Gold boom between 1872 and 1899, Charters Towers opened the only Stock Exchange outside of a capital city. During this period, the population was approximately 27,000, this made Charters Towers Queensland's largest City outside of Brisbane. The City was also known as "The World", because it was said that anything one might want could be found in Charters Towers
Charters Towers is the most beautiful inland city in Queensland. like Kalgoorlie, Cue and Coolgardie in Western Australia it is a city built from the proceeds of goldmining
Located 130 km south-west of Townsville, 1506 km from Brisbane via Townsville and 310 m above sea-level, Charters Towers lies on gently undulating country 138 km east of the Great Dividing Range.
