This is a trekking and rock climbing paradise - a must-go if youre traveling to southern Chile. The valleys center is surrounded by 1000-meter granite walls, waterfalls and forest. Dont miss sliding down one of the worlds best natural water slides on the La Junta River near the Refugio Cochamo.
The area is known to be rainy, but remains fairly dry in summer. We saw no rain for our two-week visit.
Getting There : Drive or catch a bus from the city of Puerto Montt to the town of Cochamo. Here you can hire horses or get a lift to the trailhead. The trail take about four hours hiking or by horse.
The trail is well-used, easy to follow and always parallels the north side of the Cochamo river all the way to the Refugio Cochamo.
Accomodations: Theres an affordable place to stay or camp - free camping also possible - at Refugio Cocham located where Rio La Junta connects with Rio Cochamo. Here you find hot showers, meals and most importantly, home-made micro brew.
Whent to go: The climate can be quite dry in the summer. February is by far the driest month to go, and also recommendable January through March. December can also be wet or dry.
.
Climbing: So, so, so much rock and new route potential.
