I worked at Cambridge Bay before and during the Dew line construction. The first C124 Globemaster ice landing was at Cambridge Bay on our ice runway. We had no land runway until the Dew line constructed one. The landing was a big event. Ice scientists and others had surveyed and checked the ice, a survey crew was set up to measure the ice deflection. The aircraft was parked with engines running and pointed for a quick takeoff. If the ice deflected beyond limits, a red flare would be fired and everyone was to get out of the way . The crew would close the clamshell doors and attempt to take off. A movie camera was set up to record the event. What happened? Nothing except to unload and do a normal take off.
