I replied to this before, but I think it got deleted....

The violet serves the purpose of showing where radar data are unavailable. However, the bands outside of the USA are pretty ugly. I'll try to think of a way to get rid of them while still preserving the information inside the coverage area. This may be in the form of a second map. For the time being the "unavailable" data has been changed to a transparent background.
