UPDATE 9-27-08: Elevation Profile added: Click here to view a big Elevation Profile for the BMT. It's in PDF format. Click here for a printable version of the profile. It's 5 pages.

UPDATE 9-24-08: Track amended to include the "John Muir Trail Reroute" near the Hiawassee River. The reroute is about 2.4 miles long and cuts off some road walking. Data was collected by Ken Jones. Thanks!

UPDATE 9-01-08: Corrected mistake between USFS 42 and Three Forks. An earlier version of this track showed the BMT following the AT where it shouldn't have.

Hello,

This is a rough plot of the Benton Mackaye Trail. It is not very accurate when it comes to the details, but It's the best I can do at the moment. I made this track based on maps, gps data that I have collected myself, and gps data collected by others. If you have better data and would like to help me improve the accuracy of this track, please let me know and I'll gladly incorporate the new data into the file. I'd like to make this as accurate as possible.

This file also contains 100+ placemarks. They tend to block out the trail so feel free to erase or turn them off if they get annoying. Hope this is useful to someone.

Note: I have also uploaded a version of the file without the placemarks... you may want to use that file if you are viewing the trail in Google Maps (not Earth). The placemarks tend to cause problems with Google Maps.

Note #2: If you use National Geographic Topo! then you can download a GPSXCHANGE track of the BMT Georgia section that one of the trail maintainers made available. This track data is much more accurate than my data. Definitely check that out if you get a chance. If you don't have Topo! software you can use the freely downloadable GPSBabel to convert the Topo! file to a Google Earth file.
