Nicholson Map 4a: The Battle of Mount Sorrel 2-13 June 1916
Map Upgraded October 14, 2007
This is also described in Nicholson Chapter V.
Nicholson Chapter V: The St.Eloi Craters and Mount Sorrel, 1916This follows up on the St. Eloi Craters as described in Map 3. There are 3 maps in this series, so to start I am seeking local expertise on the alignment of Map 4a for June 2, 1916. When that is aligned, I can go to Map 4b (June 3,1916) and Map 4c (June 13, 1916). This is difficult as Sanctuary Wood seems to have changed in configuration and Maple Copse appears to have disappeared. The only remaining alignment is the road running north of Observatory Ridge and down to Mount Sorrel.
It was here at Mount Sorrel on June 2, 1916 that General Mercer (Commander of the 3rd Division) met his maker, after having his ear drum shattered by shell fire, his leg broken by a bullet and finally losing his life to a shrapnel shell. It was here that the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry held their ground, although losing 150 men, including the Commanding Officer (Lt.Col. Buller). Had it not been for the allied superiority in aeroplanes and artillery, the gains of the Germans of June 2, 1916 would have held.
