Nicholson XV: The Final Advance, 12 October - 11 November

Carrying on from Nicholson Map 14, we have the Canadians finishing their last attack on German positions. Now the Canadian forces headed out into the area of rolling landscapes and fast moving rivers, plus the quickly retreating German forces who were demolishing what they could during their retreat. Vicious fighting continued for both the 3rd and 4th Divisions, but soon the Canadians were back in Belgian territory. A welcome site, as the villages were less plundered than those they experienced in France in the previous months.

Politics and war were now moving in unison.. The Germans wanted to negotiate an acceptable armistice, so another loss was unacceptable. They withdrew to the Meuse-Antwerp line, all the while the Canadians were closing in on Mons, not only from the direct approach from the west, but in a sweeping route from the south. The Canadians were set to capture Mons on November 10, 1918. On November 11, 1918 the final act was completed, Mons fell to the Allies - to the Canadians in fact, perhaps to the R.C.R. or perhaps to the 42nd Battalion? It does not really matter, for at 0630 on November 11, 1918 the Canadian HQ was advised that hostilities would cease at 1100 hours, and so they did.

The "Great War" ended - or did it? Was the Second World War a new war or just a continuation of the First World War?
