The two placemarks here show the home where impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) and his family spent their summers late in his life, and the nearby cemetery when most of the family is buried.

Renoir had a house in Essoyes, his wife Aline's hometown, as early as 1895 and later bought the adjoining property and built a studio. In the cemetery just down the road are the graves of Renoir, Aline and their sons Pierre the actor, Jean the filmmaker and Claude, plus that of Jean's second wife, Dido Freire.

Aline, who predeceased her husband in 1915, is buried just behind him, with her mother and the boys and a grandson. Pierre-Auguste and Aline have bronze busts atop their headstones, his the creation of his sculpting assistant Richard Guino. Aline's bust, which Renoir himself made, was stolen in 2005 but recovered and replaced.
