Sándor Kőrösi Csoma – or as he signed
his English letters, Alexander Csoma de Kőrös –
was born in 1784, in Transylvania, in the village of
Kőrös, part of Háromszék county (today Chiurus, Romania).

In 1819 he started his long jouney on foot toward
Tibet to find the ancient homeland of Hungarians.
He was the first European who studied the Tibetian
culture by living among the Tibetians. Sándor Kőrösi
Csoma became the embodyment of Buddhist ideal:
a bodhissatva, a hero of awakening, able for the great deed:
he opened the door for the world towards Buddhism.

Sándor Kőrösi Csoma was not able to etch his name in
the history of scholarship as the discoverer of the ancient
Hungarian homeland. He figures there instead as an explorer
of an unknown civilization and as the founder of a new branch
of scholarship, that of Tibetan studies. This is how he finally won
recognition for himself, and through his tireless efforts, he won
a degree of recognition for the Hungarian people as well.

Egy szegény árva magyar, pénz és taps nélkül, de elszánt kitartó
hazafiságtól lelkesítve - Kőrösi Csoma Sándor - bölcsőjét kereste a
magyarnak, és végre összeroskadt fáradalmai alatt. Távol a hazától
alussza örök álmát, de él minden jobb magyarnak lelkében.

Nem maga helyzet, nem kincs a nemzetek védőre, hanem
törhetetlen honszeretet, zarándoki önmegtagadás és vas akarat.
Vegyetek példát hazánk nagyjai és gazdagai, egy árva fiún, és
legyetek hű magyarok tettel és nem puszta szóval, áldozati
készséggel és nem olcsó fitogtatással!
