Introducing Google Earth 5.0

Introducing Earth 5.0 : Monday February 2, 2009, Earth 5.0 was released with three new features which enable users to dive into the ocean, travel back in time, easily create a narrated tour in Google Earth and share it with friends, and visit Mars.

  • Ocean in Google Earth: a new feature that enables users of Google Earth to dive beneath the water surface, explore 3D under water terrain and browse ocean-related content contributed by leaders in ocean science and advocacy.

Imagery Update in Washington, DC

New imagery in Washington DCOn January 18, two days before Barack Obama was sworn in as our 44th president, we pushed out an imagery update for the Washington, DC area including the National Mall area. Much of the new imagery is from 2008.

Part of the new imagery shows clearer imagery to the US Naval Observatory. We've also released some imagery from the day of the Inauguration, which you can read about below.

New Google Earth Help Forums

If you ever have questions regarding Google Earth, be sure to check out our brand new Help Forum for Google Earth or our Help Forum for Google Maps. Since its launch on January 16, hundreds of questions (and answers!) have already been posted. Come check it out if you need help with any aspect of Google Earth or Google Maps.

High-res Paintings in Google Earth

Prado Museum in Google EarthYou can now view from a collection of ultra high-res paintings from the Prado Museum ("Museo Nacional del Prado") in Google Earth. The 14 selected paintings each have a resolution of up to 14 gigapixels, which is over 14,000 megapixels. This amazing resolution allows you to zoom in and see the smallest details in these beautiful paintings.

The new Prado layer also includes 3D models of the buildings, allowing you to experience the museum as if you were actually there.

To view the paintings, simply select 3D buildings from the layer folders area in your left panel, then search for "Prado" in the search box at the top. Once there, you can click on an icon to view each masterpiece. For help in navigating through the photos, please see this brief tutorial.

Santa Tracker 2008 Statistics Report

Once again, the NORAD "Santa Tracker" proved to be a big hit. There were around 9,000,000 unique visitors on Christmas Eve who downloaded the tracker. NORAD and Google will be following Santa again in 2009.

Flight 1549 (the "Miracle on the Hudson")

US Airways Flight 1549People are often drawn to Google Earth and other online mapping tools for a wide variety of current events. US Airways Flight 1549 brought out even more, due to the incredible and heroic actions of pilot Chelsey Sullenberger.

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 flew into a flock of birds about 90 seconds after takeoff, knocking out both engines. After briefly attempting to reach another nearby airport for an emergency landing, Sullenberger decided to bring the plane down in the Hudson River to avoid crashing in populated area. The plane landed in the river, and all passengers survived with only a few injuries.

Using the data published by FlightAware, you can now see the flight in Google Earth through a variety of means. Google Maps Mania has a handful of tools, EarthSwoop has a minute-by-minute simulation (GE Plugin Required), and Google Earth Blog has recreated the flight in a short video using the Google Earth flight simulator.

The Inauguration of Barack Obama

Inauguration of Barack ObamaThe Inauguration of Barack Obama as our country's 44th president was truly a historic event, and Google Earth was there to help capture the moment. A few days prior to the inauguration, we updated our imagery for the Washington, DC area. Many other sites used our tools to help with the Inauguration, such as a map showing restricted roads during the ceremony, lists of events, and even a 3D model of the Inaugural Stage (download it - 7.3 Mbytes).

Just before the inauguration began, at 11:19am EST, our satellite imagery partner GeoEye captured an amazing overhead shot of the entire national mall. The image can be viewed in Google Earth using this KML file .

News From Outreach

Story Feature  - The Outreach "big bang"

Many of you will be familiar with the work of Google Earth Outreach some of you may not. In a nutshell, the Outreach program seeks to give non-profits and public benefit organizations the knowledge and resources to reach out the world and inform millions of people exactly what they are doing, where, when, how and why. But how did Outreach come to be? After Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, many non profit organizations began to realise the huge potential for presenting information not just on the web, but on the map. Shortly after Katrina, many non profit organizations contacted us asking questions about how they could integrate Google Earth and Google Maps into their work and this became Google Earth Outreach. Although the work of Outreach has been around for over one year, in this new addition to the "Sightseer" newsletter, the latest news and reviews will be available for you all peruse and join those working for the greater good.

KML Feature - UNHCR Internally Displaced Persons, Somalia

One of many KML layers hosted on the Google Earth Outreach Showcase, this layer created by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) provides an animated account of the the Population Movement Tracking (PMT) program to monitor IDP's, or Internally Displaced Persons. The UNHCR's development of this KML is ongoing and as they learn more, you will see the results. Check it out on the Showcase .In response to the 2006 drought in Somalia, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) began the Population Movement Tracking (PMT) to monitor IDP's, or Internally Displaced Persons. This KML presents an animated account of population movement enabling you to better understand the factors affecting movement, whether through flooding, insecurity/violence or other factors. To view the animation, press the "play" button on the right hand side of the time line bar which can be found at the top of the image viewer."
